NIGERIA GOVERNORS DISCUSS ON SARS AND SWAT INITIATIVE

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has expressed concern about the timing for the creation of Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) squad by the Nigerian Police to replace the dissolved Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS). The 36 state governors expressed the concern in a communiqué issued on Thursday after the NGF 19th teleconference. It was signed by the forum’s Chairman and Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, in Abuja. The communique said that the governors deliberated on a number of issues affecting the country particularly the nationwide protests, riots and demonstrations against the activities of officials of FSARS and the Nigerian Police. It noted that the governors at the meeting were briefed by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu, on protests against SARS and plan to create an intelligence-driven SWAT. After a minor set back, social media app, Twitter, has created an emoji for the #EndSARS protest ongoing across Nigerian states. There was an uneasy calm late hours of Thursday when social media app, Twitter reportedly crashed as many could not refresh and get updates. It was however noticed that an emoji of a tight fist now accompanies the EndSARS hashtag, of course, Nigerian youths are ecstatic about the development showering unreserved praises on the Twitter manager led by CEO Jack.

BREAKING - COURT FURTHER ADJOURNED FAYOSE CASE

The Federal High Court in Lagos, on Tuesday, further adjourned until October 19, and 20, for the continuation of trial of former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, facing charges of fraud and money laundering. The prosecution Counsel, Mr Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), who was expected to call his eighth witness, told the trial judge, Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke, that there were difficulties bringing the witness to court. Following the request by the prosecutor, Justice Aneke adjourned the matter until October 19 and 20 for the continuation of trial. Fayose is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged N6.9billion fraud and money laundering. He was first arraigned on October 22. 2018, before Justice Mojisola Olatoregun, alongside his company, Spotless Investment Ltd, on 11 counts bordering on fraud and money laundering offences. Controversial Nigerian singer, Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, has said that the safety of protesters stopped him from going ahead with the planned Tuesday protest. He said this during a live chat with Frank Mba, the spokesperson of the Nigerian Police Force on Tuesday. The chat focused on the concerns of youth on the activities of the  Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). “I know my rights and yes, what really stopped me was me thinking about the safety of everybody. That was the only thing that stopped me from doing the protest. And the fact that I saw the police initial statement, that’s what made me stop the protest,” he said. Officer of the Department of State Security attached to the Osun State Command, identified as Seyi Adebowale was said to have died from wound inflicted on him by a stray bullet. The bullet, it was gathered was shot from the guns of an operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, (NSCDC) identified as Sunday Dada during the commissioning of a bridge built by the Nigeria Army in Kuta, Ayedire Local Government Area of the state on September 15. According to a source at the event, the security personnel were deployed to the town because of the presence of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Tukur Buratai and there was no break of law and order throughout the event.
